Itz Weekend Review

WOW! I hope everyone had their seat belts on this week!
European debt crisis, 1,000 intraday market moves, , wild currency moves, commodity prices collapse, volatility surges to new one-year highs.
Itz Stock Chartz had been calling for a decline in stocks for several weeks and finally the 10% correction arrived. But now what? Is this a by the dip or sell on expectations that this may have further downside?
The stock market's slump this week reflects a widespread concern among many economists that the European debt crisis could slow the U.S. economic recovery. Few expect the problems in Greece and other European nations such as Portugal and Spain to drag the United States back into recession. But the crisis has increased the uncertainty facing U.S. business leaders.
While Greece's economy isn't that large, many major European banks hold billions of dollars of its debt. Should Greece default on or restructure its debt, which many economists expect, those banks -- still recovering from the 2008-2009 financial crisis -- may cut back lending to conserve cash.
Thursday's market meltdown in the U.S. remains a mystery. Whatever the cause concerns were raised on the high-frequency trading by computers 'The Matrix'. As Itz pointed out during the week, that no matter how good the Jobs Report would be, traders would more than likely sell on the news. The Labor Department announced that April saw 290,000 new jobs, which initially lifted stocks, but the trend was down and then the fat-finger collapse in the afternoon. The jobs created were mostly from the private sector, good news, so far the economy is looking to be on track. If you combine the jobs report with the previous week's positive data from the GDP, the PMI, retail sales, personal consumption, and consumer confidence numbers we are really starting to see some improvement.
Several Itz Target Objectives were met this week. Oil hit $78, actually the low side of the Itz $WTIC chart had $75, matter of fact the COT report chart about 2 weeks ago, had a $75 price objective. Gold, Itz had a $1200/$1225 target, the daily chart shows an Inverse Head&Shoulders pattern with a $1250 completion.
So what do you do? Is a 10% correction it? Shorter term, yes we'll see a bounce, no doubt. Will it be sold into and then head lower? Maybe...one thing is for certain, investor confidence has been damaged. Just as the retail investor was beginning to feel comfortable with equities...BAM! Thursday afternoons meltdown hit. The problem is there are too many uncertainties and loose ends that need to be resolved and fixed. What would be bullish? An answer to what caused the computer glitch Thursday, FinReg passing, a Goldman Sachs settlement, the ECB needs to act before the contagion spreads. The ECB should resort to its “nuclear option” of intervening directly in the markets to purchase government bonds. If these events can happen, it would ease global uncertainty and rally markets.
In this WSJ report, comments from Birinyi Associates reflect the same views as Itz Stock Chartz, hedge & buy beaten down stocks... WSJ.com - Bears Come Back for Wall Street's Wild Week LINK
Trades for the week: The Proshares UltraShort Crude Oil ETF (SCO) was stopped out Thursday @ $12.30, it took off that afternoon & Friday trading as high as $14.23, closing @ $13.93. Those that held entering @ $12 are looking at a 16% gain. In the Friday fat-finger Matrix Selloff, Itz suggested 2 more stocks that were on Itz Radar Watch, Walter Energy (WLT) @ $75 (or lower) & Ford (F) @ $11. These two-stocks have been sold off hard, they present an extremely attractive entry price. Granted this selling could go lower, so one may consider phasing in.

'The Matrix' Sell-off

Those not familiar with the science-fiction film starring Keanu Reeves. Earth is dominated by sentient machines. Humans are grown in pods and are connected by cybernetic implants to an artificial reality called the Matrix, which keeps their minds under control while the machines use the bioelectricity and thermal energy of their bodies as an energy source. The story resolves where a compromise and understanding that machine cannot completely rule without humans.
One cannot help but draw a correlation of how what was once trading done by men on the corner of Wall Street has evolved into  highly technological nanosecond trading, where 10's of thousands of trades are computed in a blink of an eye.

What happens when machines take over, with Mark Fisher, MBF Clearing Corp.

Itz made numerous posts on Twitter today and just prior to the meltdown posted --'Capitulation!'--, But was it really. Selling on Friday will follow through with out a doubt as Asia chimes in. The possible pivot and catalysts maybe the Jobs Report @ 8:30am. Today was a 'Preview' of how low markets can trade off of overbought conditions. Itz entered Walter Energy @ $75 ticker WLT, as highlighted this week to start accumulating. Ford was put on the Itz 'On the Radar" list entered @ $11. Again these are great long term buys. SCO spiked to a high of $14.23, although suggest stop of $12.30 was hit yesterday, it did trade as projected on the charts.
Itz Stock Chartz has for a few weeks now been repeatedly telling readers to protect against a correction, with either options, ProShares ETFs like SCO, DUG or SDS or just taking some money off the table. Things move fast, volatility as seen in the $VIX, $VXN & $OVX or the divergence in rising gold versus copper & silver warned that something was going to give ...soon. Was it a computer glitch, human error or whatever excuse the problem comes down to the FEAR of a Eurpoean Contagion that could spread into a global problem. That the credit markets and the cost of capital is going up (dejavu 2009). The 1000 point move in the Dow Jones if anything reinstated the fear and lack of confidence into the retail investor just as they were getting hopeful about stocks. That said we could see more selling either way on the Jobs Report, good or bad. Stay hedged, have your shopping list ready and tighten those seat belts!

Sell In May & ???

On April 30th Itz posted the following...

As the old stock market adage states, “Sell in May and go away,” emphasizing that the worst part of the year for stock performance is the months between May and November. To be sure, a $10,000 investment in the Dow Jones purchased in November and sold in April grows to $480,000, while the same strategy employed between May through October shows a loss of $328 (study: between 1950 – 2003) . . . thus, “sell in May and go away.” Itz is not suggesting to sell, however one must take this into consideration and hedge accordingly.

One of the most used adages in investing with years of data to back it up. But another interesting set of data is the 2003 to 2009 period, albeit a short time period, it does present some interesting results.
Let us look at the last seven years -
For 2009, "Sell in May" certainly didn't work, since the S&P 500 gained 18.7% from May 1 to October 31, 2009 and it added another 14.5% in the six months ending April 30, 2010. But what about the NEXT six months?
Itz has been looking for a pullback and on a shorter term period been cautious, but longer term remains bullish. Hedge accordingly.

Mid-Week Market Recap

Add to Technorati Favorites Subscribe in a reader

Several items to go over today: Earlier today Itz was stopped out of the ProShares Ultra short Crude Oil ETF (SCO) @ $12.30. The etf intraday got as low as $12.19 and then rallied to close @ $12.65. Needless to say the oil market was volatile today. That said oil could trend lower, as Itz maintains a $78 target and the Gold Oil Ratio's have a bit more to go on the upside, if still long SCO, raise stops accordingly.
After the close Transocean (RIG) reported earnings although it missed that isn't the issue for now that worries investors. READ CHART  Views on the stock remain mixed as highlighted by 2 members of CNBC's Fast Money:
I may have bought into the fear too early but I really think the sell-off in this space is overdone, says Karen Finerman.I wouldn't go near these names. I’m hearing about a potential moratorium on deep-water drilling greater than 5,000 feet, counters Joe Terranova. In the near term I think there’s more pain for companies such as Transocean.
Itz Pix suggested RIG back in July 2009 @ $67

Walter Energy (WLT) as Itz has been highlighting on the ITZ PIX 'On The Radar' had a wild ride today with a 7 point intraday high/low spread. Itz suggest to start accumulation under $75...there wasn't a all out BUY suggestion due to  the $SPX being under it's 50-ma 1170 & possibly heading to 1150 support (ITZ target 1135); also Friday's highly anticipated Jobs Report.

Has The Correction Started?

Add to Technorati Favorites Subscribe in a reader

Europe's spreading debt crisis-combined with an overdue stock pullback and the prospect of the Federal Reserve withdrawing its economic support-added up to one thing Tuesday: FEAR!
Investors have used similar market drops in recent months as buying opportunities. But with a fresh set of concerns and persistent calls for a correction that has yet to materialize, this time could be different.

Itz highlighted in yesterday's blog post, the divergence between copper prices versus gold's? That money was finding safety, the action today was money flowing towards the US Dollar. Look at the markets action this week, one needed Dramamine. An Euro agreement finally came together over the weekend, but its ballooning size of $144 billion has investors worried that Europe would have an even tougher time assembling an aid package if a larger country such as Spain or Portugal were to get in trouble. Traders are concerned that weakening economies in Europe could jeopardize the recovery in this country. Bottom line the numbers just don't work out.

China's stocks slid Tuesday to a seven-month low after the government hiked bank reserve requirements, sparking concern about profits and the economy. This shows the central bank is still tightening the money supply and worrying about inflation and an asset bubble.
But its not like all this news was a surprise, traders knewe about Europe, China and the Fed. It just seems like everything all of a sudden weighed in on the markets, along the the terrorist threat in NYC, the BP~Gulf oil leak. Itz has been repeatedly warning that a sell off was very over due and that a catalysts was needed.
The only underlying upcoming event that may either add to the selling or reverse it is the monthly Jobs Report this Friday.

API DATA:
Crude oil inventories rose by 2.951 million barrels of oil in the week to April 30, Washington-based trade group The American Petroleum Association (API) said Tuesday. The increase was above expectations; analysts surveyed by Platts had expected an increase of 1.54 million barrels. Gasoline stocks rose by 1.84 million barrels, also above expectations as the analysts polled had predicted an increase of 200,000 barrels. Stocks of distillates, which include heating oil and diesel, rose by 1.3 million barrels, under estimates of a rise of 1.89 million barrels. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports its more closely watched data Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. API Link

ITZ PIX ~~ "On The Radar"  Walter Energy (WLT)  Technically looking very attractive. Just reported a not so good earnings report last week, BUT the outlook looks promising. Stock and sector oversold.
"We are pleased with our coking coal contract prices for this year," said CEO Leonard. "Coupled with record pricing on carryover tons from 2008-2009 and our expanding production base, Walter Energy is positioned for an excellent year."

Which Way Will Crude Oil Prices Head?

Add to Technorati Favorites Subscribe in a reader

Oil once again is testing the $87/$88 resistance level. The GOR ~Gold:Oil Ratio ~had broken out last week and since pulled back. Gold appears to want to make a run & retest the recent $1,225 high level. Is gold's run a short term 'flight-to-safety' rally? Perhaps as copper has declined and raised doubt if the recovery has enough to follow through. Itz is eyeing Friday's all important Jobs Report, which will either spark a correction or give the stock market another leg higher. Below is a video from CNBC discussing the price levels of crude oil in coming months. Itz continues to believe that oil will head to $78 or lower, the lower end of it's upward channel. The similarites to late October/November chart could repeat, depending if oil breaks over $78 resistance. Itz has suggested hedging energy positions via ProShares UltraShort Crude Oil etf (SCO).
