Volatility Picks Up

Volatility is picking up as the dollar ticks up. Factoring in to todays move could be that tomorrow is Opex. Is this the 6% norm pullback or could it develop into more?

Volatility spikes ($VIX)

I pointed out the tight Bollinger Bands about a week ago, noting that they signaled a breakout shortly. Volatility Index ($VIX): Update

With the Volatility Index having plunged from it's nose bleed highs, it is now starting to spike again, edging over the 30 mark today. A look at the $VIX options note the large Open Interest (OI) on both the July 42.50 calls and the August 45 calls.
The $VIX today touched & closed just below the 50 day moving average. ~Chart~

$SPX & $VIX

The $VIX is up over 30 today & flirting with it's 50ma & $SPX finding support @ it's 200-ma. Now everyone assumes a higher $VIX indicates a lower $SPX, yes & no! It really means more volatility or a bigger move up & down as should be since on the $SPX the Head & Shoulders pattern now looks more evident. Albeit an intraday look it has broken below it's "neckline". Again as I've made my observations last week, expect 825 to be tested on the $SPX. One other note, what isn't seen in the $VIX are those buyers of stocks & writing covered calls, just wanted to get that in.

Volatility Index ($VIX)

After a historic rise on the volatility index [$VIX] it has subsided and now appears to be in the "normal" range. Most traders view the $VIX asa FEAR guage...when it just really measures the range the $SPX trades in. Traders have calmed down now and don't expect the $SPX to have 500 point intraday swings. Stll other indicator point to further selling on the $SPX.
